“Serious excesses” around the game of Eintracht Frankfurt

The Frankfurt police speak of “serious excesses” after the Europa League game between Eintracht Frankfurt and Royal Antwerp. Violent fans threw iron bars and Bengalos. One visitor was seriously injured.

Accordingly, there were “some serious riots and massive burning of pyrotechnic objects”. Violent actions by Belgian hooligans had already been feared beforehand.

500 Belgian fans gathered in the city center on Thursday, especially at the Christmas market at the Hauptwache. Individuals already ignited pyrotechnics. When the police intervened, the Belgians threw an iron bar on the helmet of an officer.

Paving stones thrown at pub
At the Moseleck in the Bahnhofsviertel, the supporters then threw cobblestones at the pub. Already in the first leg there had been riots at a meeting point for the Antwerp team that the Frankfurt team wanted to storm.

“Once at the stadium, the Belgian fans tried to overrun the access control; this was prevented by the police. In a second attempt, 100 Belgian fans were able to overrun the security service’s access control to the upper tier,” said the statement on Friday. In the half-time break, 250 Frankfurt fans are said to have attacked the police officers and pelted them with stones. The police established the identity of 150 troublemakers.

A visitor seriously injured by pyro
In the stadium, the Antwerp team threw a Bengalo into the crowd and seriously injured a visitor. The alleged perpetrator could be found. He is to be brought before a judge today. Frankfurt fans threw three firecrackers into the interior and injured stewards.

After the game, the Belgians are said to have kicked out parts of a stadium fence and attacked the police. “The only way to prevent them from breaking through the sector separation was by using pepper spray,” said the police. At least there were no further riots during the night.
